Continuing Professional Development

Principles of CPD
The Fire Service Safety Partnership (FSSP) supports the concept and practice of Continuing Professional Development (CPD), believing it to be essential to maintaining knowledge and skills in fire safety.

Definition of CPD
The FSSP defines CPD as "The systematic maintenance, improvement and broadening of knowledge and skills and the development of personal qualities necessary for the execution of professional and technical duties in fire safety throughout the practitioner's working life".

Reasons for CPD
There are three fundamental reasons for carrying out CPD:

  • to demonstrate that existing knowledge and skills are being regularly refreshed, in order to maintain existing competency
  • to acquire new knowledge and develop more skills necessary in order to keep up with developments in fire safety
  • to acquire new underpinning knowledge and skills that may be necessary for career development.

The FSSP recommends that all delegates attending fire training courses undertake CPD in accordance with the current advice and guidance.

Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE)
The IFE is recognised internationally as the leading exponent of high standards in fire safety engineering and training. Recent work with the IFE has aligned all FSSP courses with the IFE CPD scheme.

Delegates attending FSSP courses can be confident not only that courses have been approved by the IFE but also that attendance at FSSP courses will count towards an individuals formal CPD e.g. Fire Marshal Competent Person course 5 ½ hours CPD; Fire Safety for Managers and Fire Risk Assessment course 6 hours CPD.
